NED KESC vow for strategic partnership to achieve future energy national security

A landmark MoU has been signed between NED University and KESC on Friday, 17th May 2013 at KESC head office. NED University team headed by the Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Muhammad Afzal Haque included Prof. Sarosh H. Lodi, Prof. Dr. Saad A. Qazi and Engr. Abdul Majeed Shaikh, while KESC team had Dr. Naveed Ahmed, Engr. Asif. H. Siddiqui headed by CEO KESC, Syed Nayyer Hussain. Both prestigious institutions agreed that academic-industry should collaborate to help improve national economy. Heads of both institutions agreed to focus on reduction of greenhouse gases, promoting alternate and renewable energy resources, development of energy management systems to achieve energy efficiency. Both institutions also agreed to exchange human resources for training and development. Teams of both institutes resolved to initiate and coordinate various projects for improved national grid including the Smart Grid technology research and development projects.

Dr. Ishrat-Ul-Ebad Khan Green Campus Initiative at NED University

Energy Crises is the leading problem faced by modern world today including Pakistan. Universities must play a major role mitigating energy crises. In this regards, NED University of Engineering & Technology has planned to embark on "Energy Conservation Initiative" for becoming the first Green Campus in Pakistan. Results of the exercise jointly conducted by NED University and KESC, to identify potential areas for energy conservation, are highly promising. It is envisaged that the transformation of NED University into Green Campus will not only enable it to save Rs. 24 Million annually, but in addition, it will also help in reducing 365 Metric tons of Carbon Emission, thus playing an important role in the fight against global warming. The proposal of Rs. 200 Million has been accepted by the Sindh Government in the kind patronage of honorable Governor of Sindh Dr. Ishrat-Ul- Ebad Khan.

Pathway to Smart Engineering - Smart Grid Seminar at NED University

Electrical Engineering department of NED University and IEEE Power and Energy Society (NEDUET Chapter) successfully organized an informative seminar titled as ‘Smart Grid – Pathway to Smart Engineering’ on Wednesday, August 28, 2013. The session featured prominent speakers from the Smart Grid Department of SIEMENS Pakistan, who created an insight regarding the benefits of Smart Grid technology and stressed upon the need to smarten up substation automation. The presence of Dr. Shoaib Zaidi (Dean ECE- NEDUET), Dr. Muhammad Ali Memon (Co-Chairman Electrical Engineering Department- NEDUET), Mr. Aqeel Ahmed (Director of Smart Grid Department, SIEMENS), Mr. Asadullah (SIEMENS), Mr. Irfan Ahmed (Chief Engineer, Consultant- Pakistan Nuclear Regularity Authority), Muhammad Ashraf Palari (DY. Director, PSQCA) and respectable guest from other organizations added to the grace of the occasion. Apart from the stated guests, the senior alumni members also extended their full support and appreciation through their participation. The event was officially sponsored by ‘SIEMENS Pakistan’. The program proved to be a fruitful interactive session for the students since its core aim was to create awareness regarding the ongoing Smart Grid revolution around the globe. The seminar was attended by a large number of students. Dean ECE connected the topic with essential and advanced needs of professional engineers. Mr. Fahad Liaqat (Executive Engineer- SIEMENS Pak.) highlighted the need of Smart Grids, described the ‘Smart Grid Suite’, ‘Distribution Diagnostic Systems’ and ‘Load Management System’ in detail. Mr. Shehryar Khan (Executive Engineer- SIEMENS Pak.) discussed the benefits of Smart Network Planning, the current power trends in Pakistan and the major challenges in power supply along with practical demonstration of Load Flow Analysis and Short Circuit Calculations at various real world Power system layouts using simulation software. The chief guest, Mr. Aqeel Ahmed in his address introduced the new concept of ‘Prosumership’, focusing on the fact that a technology alone cannot bring a revolution; rather a revolution can only be brought about by changing the mindsets of the people. Mementos were presented to all speakers by Dr. Muhammad Ali Memon.

Mechanical Engineering Department (NEDUET) is pleased to announce Conference on Energy and Sustainability. The goal of the conference is to provide a forum for exchange of ideas and information regarding current research activities and plans for addressing the energy and sustainability issues in the country.
